THE CHALLENGE:

With no perceived alternative to the traditional approach to suicide prevention – i.e., focusing on persons at risk – how can the mental health community improve upon the effectiveness of its techniques?

THE SPARK:

After careful examination of groundbreaking research by subject experts, CalMHSA and Civilian shifted the standard focus away from victims themselves, and toward their support group of family, friends and influencers.

THE MOVEMENT:

Through a preventive framework called “Know the Signs,” CalMHSA and Civilian provided educational resources and learning tools for those closest to persons in crisis, resulting in a significant increase among people now more likely to intervene.

Currently, this framework is widely acknowledged as a “best practice,” and has been adopted not just by communities across the U.S., but globally as well.
